Straw oboe experimen

I want to find out if the straw can make the sound? I want to find out how loud it can be with a shorter straw? Longer straw should be able to make a stronger  sound? I want to find out why it makes a sound?

I think its gonna be very easy and it will work. The shorter straw should make a louder sound. The longer the straw should have a weak sound because the straw is too long and we have to use more energy. I think by putting holes in the straw the sound should be
better.

1) First we have to flatten the straw.
2) On the top of the straw we have to cut a little bit of it.  We have to make a point.
3) Then you can try it out and see if it is loud.
4) If you want, you can make hole in the straw around the middle.
5) If you want you can add up a straw on the bottom putting one in the straw.

I ended up making one hole and on the first go it doesn't work. But if we keep trying it will work. My  one was very average. When I had a longer straw it was harder to blow.

I thought it was a very nice project we did, because we got to learn lots of stuff about sound. The sound was very annoying as well. I think you should give it a try and it’s great to annoy people.

We learnt how sound travels through the straw. Another thing we learnt is how the pitch goes higher when your finger is removed from the hole.

Questions:
1. What is producing the sound? The air is producing sound from the straw.
2. What pitch did we get when all holes were closed, compared to when the holes were
open? We got a high pitch sound when the straw holes were open.

3. What does opening or closing a hole in the straw really mean in terms of vibrating an
air column? You are changing the pitch of the sound.
4. What happens to the pitch as you cut off pieces of the straw? The pitch went high Why? because there is more space for the air to get out.
